Sandra Grant, a twenty-two-year old schizophrenic woman, learns her illness is caused by a past life tragedy as a Chinese peasant woman named Jun. The lives of these two characters converge in Two Lifetimes, a novel based on nightmares, secrets, delusions, and the Chinese belief in reincarnation with an acrimonious twist.
After suffering a mental breakdown caused by constant nightmares of a bloody, six-year-old Chinese girl, Sandra is sent to the psychiatric ward. There she meets Tai Yang, a handsome Chinese man who turns out to be her son from her previous life. Realizing that they both share the same nightmares, Sandra and Tai uncover a secret that Tai’s father, Kang, is hiding about the suicide of his wife Jun, Sandra’s former life. Sandra must face her past in order to make amends with her mistakes and gain closure she needs to overcome her illness.
Two Lifetimes will fascinate readers with stories describing life in China. It also explores gender issues in China, particularly the obligation of having a male heir and the adverse consequences of honoring that obligation.
