一、本书选录范围包括汉、元、明、清各时期的织绣精品（均包括服装）150余件。

二、凡具有历史、科学、艺术价值的北京地区考古发掘品和传世品，尽可能对其不同的品种和纹样形式加以精选收录。

三、选录的织绣按时代顺序、品种、样式编排。同一时代织绣，出土文物在前，传世品在后。品种分丝织、缂丝和刺绣三大类，每一类又分织料、服装、欣赏品等。

四、卷首有《北京地区织绣艺术》作为概论，图版有随文说明和附录简介。对于织绣文物的名称、年代、原存地和现存地均有介绍。学术界对于某件藏品存在的不同见解在图版说明中加以介绍，以供研究者参考。
