About the Book

Bronze drums, as a special type of percussion instrument, are one of the most important archaeological artifacts widely distributed in Southern China and several Southeast Asian countries. In China, bronze drums have been put into use by many ethnic groups ever since pre-historic times, particularly in southern China’s Yunnan province and southwestern China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Generally, scholars prefer to name each type of bronze drum after the very place where it is found, as a result of which bronze drums in China can generally be categorized into eight types. Each type boasts its own distinctive features and unique cultural connotations.

This book introduces bronze drums widely employed by many ethnic groups for various purposes such as worshiping God, mourning the dead, praying for rains, celebrating important and special festivals, wedding ceremonies or even new-house entering, etc. Ever since their initial emergence in China, bronze drums have been gradually developed to be invaluable artworks that integrate carving, portrait, ornamentation, music and dancing arts. They are indeed a living fossil of China’s brilliant folk culture.
