About the Book
An Illustrated History of Chinese Painting traces artists and masterpieces in Chinese painting history. With pictures and text in two volumes, the author follows dynasties chronologically and discusses artists and their artworks, offering historical and academic insights into art in an easy-to-understand language for both professionals and the general public.
Volume One chronicles over 400 artworks by more than 120 artists from the primitive times up to the Yuan, tracing the evolution of art through different dynasties. Volume Two presents more than 500 artworks, most of which are paintings, by over 180 artists of the Ming and the Qing.
With a total of 300 artists and 900 paintings, An Illustrated History of Chinese Painting is perhaps the most comprehensive book of Chinese painting in the English publication. Each artist is given a profile and each painting has the type, dimensions, year of creation, and the location information, in addition to a short introduction to and an analysis of the painting. One noticeable feature is that some important artists who had long been marginalized or misunderstood by art historians such as Qian Xuan and the Four Wangs of the Qing dynasty have been given due attention in the book.
