《两岸现代汉语常用词典》收汉字近八千个，收词近四万五千条，全书约两百六十万字。其中两岸共用的条目42,700条，大陆通用的条目1,300条，台湾通用的条目1,000条。

这本词典是北京语言大学和台北中华语文研习所的专家学者联袂历时四年多编成的，它的最大特点是如实反映了两岸汉语在字形和语汇上的异同。由于地理、方言的原因和两岸在隔离的情况下各自进行语言规范化的取舍不同，语汇、文字出现的差异难免造成语言沟通上的困难，也给海外华人、华侨和国外汉语学习、使用者带来不便。两岸词典编写组本着“从实际出发，正视大同中的小异，在异中求通”的原则，收词覆盖社会各个方面，释义上不套用，例证上避免过分民俗化，以克服两岸使用者理解上的障碍。
