About the Book

图书摘评

“The house with cob walls and half a year’s food, and no daughter should marry a man from Xiajiang.” The 67 years old Jiang Yinxiang remembered this for a lifetime. From “poor, dirty and backward” to “green, rich and beautiful,” a “metamorphosis” of the countryside is staged here. Xiajiang village, an ordinary village, is a mirror reflecting the difficult struggle for survival, development and revitalization of an ordinary Chinese village.

— Chapter 1: Xiajiang Village

Telling the story of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s visit to Xiajiang village is the most passionate thing for the “star tour guide” Jiang Yinxiang. Building biogas, sending experts, and developing industries … whatever the people care about, the General Secretary bears in mind. To be the leader of production and development, the model of the new style, the leader of harmony, the caring person of the people, Jiang Yinxiang led the party members and cadres to work extremely hard till their heads turn white.

— Chapter 5: Do Not Be an Official without the People in Mind

Xiajiang village has changed. The road has straightened the mountain road into the village, and the micro-bus has made it convenient for the public to travel. The picturesque scenery of the countryside has attracted tourists and brought back the wandering sons and daughters to their hometown. The scenery, food, farm work and performances have turned clear waters and green mountains into gold mountains and silver mountains, which have boosted the villagers’ pockets and brought about a new style of countryside.

— Chapter 8: Life Becomes More Comfortable

图书介绍

The year is critical for building a moderately prosperous society in an all-round way, especially in rural China. To achieve a moderately prosperous society, no one can be left behind. Targeted poverty alleviation is one of the three tough battles China must win. Xiajiang village in Chun’an county, Zhejiang province is the contact point for five provincial party secretaries. In just a few decades, it has transformed from a “poor, dirty and backward” village to a “green, rich and beautiful” rural community, forming the Xiajiang model of targeted poverty alleviation. The book recorded the revitalization of Xiajiang village from poverty to wealth, showing the sentiment of party members and cadres that they should not be an official if they do not have the people in mind.

Table of Contents

Chapter 1        Xiajiang Village / 1

“The house with cob walls and half a year’s food, and no daughter should marry a man from Xiajiang.” The 67 years old Jiang Yinxiang remembered this for a lifetime. From “poor, dirty and backward” to “green, rich and beautiful,” a “metamorphosis” of the countryside is staged here. Xiajiang village, an ordinary village, is a mirror reflecting the difficult struggle for survival, development and revitalization of an ordinary Chinese village.

Chapter 2        Those Memories of Hunger / 9

The memory of the past 60 years ago is still bitter today. The “dirt noodles” made from the dust collected from the mill were “the best thing Jiang Yinxiang had ever eaten as a child”; Jiang Zuhai carried a hundred jin (catty) of wood for 100 li (50 kilometers or about 30 miles) on foot in order to get food for his family; Jiang Deming, who was obsessed with studying, left school in tears in order to get enough to eat… Hunger! For a long time, it is the lingering memory of the people of Xiajiang.

Chapter 3        Why Can’t We Get out of the Circle of Poverty? / 33

Poverty seems to be a dilemma that Xiajiang people can’t get rid of. Setting fire to the mountains, “slash-and-burn,” the harvest is not as much as planted; when doing business, the mountain road is rugged, which has been taken by no one; when running a factory, the technology cannot keep up, and there are even fewer prominent enterprises to lead… local cadres and the masses have conducted in-depth discussions again and again, and found the root cause of poverty.

Chapter 4        The First Time We Had Enough to Eat / 51

“Let everyone have enough to eat, and that is the real thing.” With this idea in mind, the newly appointed village secretary Jiang Yinxiang “coaxed” the county agricultural research institute into giving him two and a half jin of hybrid rice seeds. From the trial to seed production, Xiajiang people filled their stomachs, and Xiajiang village removed the hat of “half-year food.” Immediately after, the people of Xiajiang tightened their belts and built the Fenglin Harbor Bridge.

Chapter 5        Do Not Be an Official without the People in Mind / 67

Telling the story of General Secretary Xi Jinping’s visit to Xiajiang village is the most passionate thing for the “star tour guide” Jiang Yinxiang. Building biogas, sending experts, and developing industries … whatever the people care about, the General Secretary bears in mind. To be the leader of production and development, the model of the new style, the leader of harmony, the caring person of the people, Jiang Yinxiang led the party members and cadres to work extremely hard till their heads turn white.

Chapter 6        A Blueprint to End Poverty / 85

Xiajiang people can hardly think that it has been nearly 20 years since Xiajiang became the provincial party committee secretary’s contact point. With the goal of poverty alleviation and common prosperity, successive provincial party committee secretaries have guided the people of Xiajiang bravely forward along the road of green development. From a poor village to a well-off village, then to a star village and a model village, in the future, Xiajiang will drive the surrounding villages and towns to get rich together!

Chapter 7        Beautiful Countryside Community / 99

The slogan “Out of Xiajiang! Develop Xiajiang!” has given the people of Xiajiang a greater scope for development. The village of Xiajiang has become a 340-square-kilometer “Greater Xiajiang,” with more scenic routes in chains, more experience points, and more new industries planned in packages. “It is good to ride on the back of Xiajiang” has become the consensus of the surrounding township cadres.

Chapter 8        Life Becomes More Comfortable / 119

Xiajiang village has changed. The road has straightened the mountain road into the village, and the micro-bus has made it convenient for the public to travel. The picturesque scenery of the countryside has attracted tourists and brought back the wandering sons and daughters to their hometown. The scenery, food, farm work and performances have turned clear waters and green mountains into gold and silver mountains, which have boosted the villagers’ pockets and brought about a new style of countryside.

Chapter 9        Running for Prosperity, No One Should Be Left Behind / 139

How to make the poor households in the village rich, the village cadres have been brainstorming hard. Good policies help them to use enough; finding jobs help them to come up with ideas; doing loans, running more errands for them … they not only focus on the present, but also have to look at the long term. The village is planning to open a joint company, so that each family can share the dividends. No one is left behind, that is the real well-off.

Chapter 10 Reflections on the Change of Xiajiang / 147

The change in Xiajiang is not easy to come by. The same mountain, the same people, and the same desire for change, but it has been in the circle of poverty for decades, and it is only in recent years that we have found a road to wealth that works. This road is about efficiency and environmental protection, this road is about science and technology and expert leadership, and this road is for all people to walk on together.

Chapter 11      The Revelation of Xiajiang / 169

Some people say that Xiajiang’s being rich and wealthy should be all thanks to the blessing of the provincial party secretaries making it a contact point. In fact, the change of Xiajiang relies on the guidance of the “8-8 Strategies” and the inspiration of the “Two Mountains” concept … The village appearance is clean and beautiful, people and nature live in harmony, and the spiritual and material wealth are in tendon together. The experience harvested in the experimental field can benefit more new rural areas.

Chapter 12      Rural Revitalization, There Is Still a Long Way to Go / 189

Xiajiang, the “model village,” is not slacking off yet. To let professionals do professional work, the village has invited the first professional manager; to give more powers to the development of the “Greater Xiajiang,” they plan to introduce more outside enterprises. However, the villagers’ mentality of being rich and comfortable and the interpersonal conflicts caused by economic disputes are the new problems facing the future development of Xiajiang village.
