This book is a special collection of the best line drawings in the Dunhuang Caves (also known as the Mogao Grottoes). The Dunhuang Caves are the pearls of the Silk Road and a garden of art, while hand posture is a tiny part of this treasury. According to chronological order, this book introduces the most typical Dunhuang hand postures in the Sixteen States period (304-439), the Northern Wei dynasty (386-534), the Western Wei dynasty (535-556), the Northern Zhou dynasty (557-581), the Sui dynasty (581-618), the Tang dynasty (618-907), the Five Dynasties (907-960), the Song dynasty (960-1279), and the Yuan dynasty (1271-1368), etc. Skilled techniques of line drawing are adopted to present these postures, recording unique Buddhist art and social life in different periods from a special perspective.
About the Author
Li Zhenfu was born in Anhui province in 1940, and studied painting in the Anhui Art College in 1958. In 1959 he was singled out to study in the Central Academy of Arts and Design in Beijing as a mural painting major, and was assigned to work in the Gansu Dunhuang Research Academy in 1964. He served as the director of the Academy’s Art Institute for many years. He is now a researcher of the Academy, and a member of the Asian Cultural Exchange Association and the China Artists Association.
