Sun Yong is a Chinese landscape painter. Born in 1957, Sun graduated from Zhejiang Art Academy in 1981, majoring in traditional Chinese art. He is now president of Zhejiang Painting Academy, member of the Chinese Artists Association, and the national class one artist.
In Chinese classical philosophy, nature and man are believed to coexist, and sometimes can even be made into one. Anyone who communes with nature can be called a philosopher. Those who can express such supreme realm of life experience in their paintings are treated as great Chinese painters. In this regard, they are all philosophers. Sun is a true Chinese landscape painter in this sense.
Sun reaches the quietness of the humane through the activeness of the wise. He practices the humanistic care with wisdom, and demonstrates his spirit and mind between the activeness and quietness. No wonder he “sees” the meaning of the world and life. That is exactly the key idea of the painting of Chinese landscape philosophy: Clear your mind and heart to realize the highest truth of the universe. The dynamic is with the static, rivers with mountains, happiness with lives, and wisdom with morality. All of these come from the peace of mind, which is the great source of wisdom.
This is Vol. 4 of the Artists of Zhejiang, China series.
